Before we dive into the reasons blogging is a great career choice, particularly for moms, I want to touch on how everyone comes from a unique situation.

Some moms are currently not working and are full-time moms.

Some moms are working a traditional job and their children are in daycare.

Some moms are working a traditional job and their children are school-aged.

Some moms get help from grandparents and don’t pay for daycare.

Some moms are single parents raising children on their own.

Some moms split time with a divorced partner and have their children part-time.

There are plenty of other situations out there that I haven’t named.

My point is these advantages to blogging as a career will look a little different to each person based on their situation.

For example, the stay-at-home mom who is currently not bringing in any income will be excited even if their blog doesn’t get to the point of a full-time income. They went from zero income to some income so it will benefit their family monetarily.

A working mom though may be concerned with fully replacing her previous income. For this reason, you may go into blogging a little more stressed about the ability to earn a full-time income.

Does that make sense? There is no judgment here. Just a simple example of how people will have different perspectives based on where they are starting and where they want to end up.

Moms of any situation could benefit from blogging as either a career or even simply a side-hustle.

Now let’s jump into why blogging is awesome for moms!

#1 Work from Home

Blogging gives you the ability to work from home. Many people consider this a huge advantage. You don’t spend time commuting. You don’t need a professional wardrobe.

And of course, you can be a work-from-home mom. It is not easy to be home with your children and get work done depending on their ages. But blogging allows you the opportunity to give it a go.

Some moms want to be able to care for their children full time. Some moms also cannot afford to do so. Blogging is an opportunity to have the best of both worlds.

#2 Part Time/Flex Time

With blogging, you can work as much or as little as you are able. You can also work when you want. You might work from 5-7 am, during nap time, and then from 8-10 pm.

Maybe grandma will watch the kiddos one day a week and you can bust out a ton of work.

Blogging is independent so you set the rules.

You could find other work-from-home jobs, but they may not come with this level of freedom.

#3 You Can Manage Your Home

I love the phrase “managing your home”. I put value in stay-at-home parents because they are not only caring for children but managing the home. This means scheduling the gutters to be cleaned, setting up the garage door maintenance, keeping food prepared in the fridge, and everything else that comes with a home.

When both parents work traditional jobs outside the home managing your household is a struggle.

The ability to be home is huge.

You can  keep your household running so much more smoothly.

You can juggle housework, childcare, and also squeeze in time to blog. Am I saying this is easy? Absolutely not! But can it be possible…yes!

With blogging, you create your schedule. You have freedom. You can manage children’s appointments, keep up on housework such as laundry, and make dinner rather than ordering takeout on the way home from the office.

I think every home could use a manager and blogging from home gives you the ability to do so.

#4 You Don’t Have to Wait on a Raise

The money is the tricky spot of all this. It comes with pros and cons.

For now, I am going to talk about the pro. With blogging, you get what you put in. If you need to earn more income work harder, launch a better product, or pivot to a new idea.

You have the ability to control your income…to an extent.

A new blogger may just be a struggling blogger.

Once you know what you are doing though you find some level of control.

You aren’t simply waiting around for the year-end 2% raise or hoping for your boss to bless you with a bonus.

You are more in control with blogging.

Blogging gives you the ability to earn an income while getting to be home with your children.

#5 Complete Schedule Flexibility

Guess what mom? There is no such thing as a normal week. It never happens.

Someone gets sick.

Someone has a field trip.

Class holiday party this week.

Oh, now it’s fall break.

Did you just get a flat tire?

Time for the dentist.

You never get a perfect week where all kids are in school, you have no appointments, no holidays, and nothing goes wrong.

This isn’t me trying to be a pessimist. I am just being realistic. We all have busy lives with tons of scheduled and unscheduled things that pop up.

Blogging is the perfect career for a mom or even a parent in general because you can manipulate your schedule. You have complete flexibility. You don’t have to worry about missing a work meeting or running out of PTO.

Blogging is great for family life.

#6 Mental Stimulation

When I started blogging it was two-fold. I did want to eventually make money and hopefully replace my income. In the meantime, though it was the mental stimulation I craved!

My full-time job was working as a nanny. So no, I was not a stay-at-home mom, but I was doing the same tasks a stay-at-home would do.

I needed something more. I needed to push my mind.

Blogging, especially in the beginning, involves learning so many new skills. I never would have thought I could figure out how to put information on a website or create pins for Pinterest.

You can also grow and learn at your own pace. Take one task at a time and master it before moving on to the next.

Blogging has been a wonderful journey of watching both me and my business grow.

#7 Passive Income

A huge part of blogging is how you make money. It can be unpredictable at times, but often it is passive once established. For example, ads or affiliate links once placed can earn you money indefinitely. You can make money in your sleep.

You aren’t directly exchanging hours for income like you could with other stay-at-home job opportunities.

If you have to take the day off from blogging because your kid is sick or you go on vacation you can still earn income. Now I know you often can do this with a traditional job too.

But I am just saying passive income is awesome!

Negatives to Blogging

If I am going to praise blogging as a career for moms I do want to quickly point out a few negatives. I want you to know what you are getting into and I try to be real with my readers.

#1 Inconsistent Income

You do not have complete control over your income. You can’t magically wish to make $10,000 a month. You also may have a month with strong sales or page views and then a weak month may follow.

You have to budget your money for the good months to cover the bad months.

Like I said though as a positive, you the have potential to grow at whatever pace you are capable of.

#2 No W-2

I am not going to completely go into the tax side of blogging but you may be a sole proprietor, create an LLC, or choose another option that fits your business. Every country is going to have its unique tax structure.

Your income coming in a nontraditional way can cause potential bumps in life. For example, if you just started making real income with your blog and want to buy a home. Your income is not going to look very reliable to get a mortgage.

#3 Blogging Can Be Lonely

You are working alone and probably at home. Blogging can definitely be lonely.

It doesn’t have to be though. You can find online groups. If you don’t need to be home with your children you could work in public locations with others. You could launch your blog with a friend or partner.

There are options out there. However, if you are a stay-at-home mom trying to make time for blogging during the quiet moments realize it will not be fulfilling social. You may still feel isolated at home.

#4 Motivation

You have to be self-motivated to blog. No one is there to check on you that you are working. You don’t have deadlines unless you set them.

Being disciplined is essential!

Hopefully my 4 negatives to blogging haven’t scared you away!

I do my best to be transparent though.

Conclusion

I think blogging is an amazing career opportunity for moms of every situation and circumstance. It is a small investment that has huge earning potential. You can spend as much or as little time as you have available.

I think it is great if moms can be home, run the house, care for their children, and still have something that is their own. Blogging is something that can contribute to your life financially and mentally.
