5 Steps to Take Immediately When Your Pin Goes Viral on Pinterest

When you notice a pin going viral or even just mini-viral you are going to be so excited!

Going viral is based on your individual numbers. It is a huge spike in blog traffic that is coming from Pinterest. For one individual getting 500 views in a day is crazy big for them, for another, it could be 5,000 or beyond. Viral is when you look at your numbers and see a crazy spike.

Pinterest Impressions

The key is to make the most out of this traffic. It is a great opportunity that you don’t know you will get again any time soon.

So how do we capitalize on a viral pin?!?

Let’s get into it!

1. Reread Your Content

My first step would be to go reread that article. It could be a new one you recently published or from a year or two ago.

Go take a read. You are looking for anything that needs to be removed, added, or improved. For example, tiny grammatical errors could be improved.

While reading through you should notice which articles are currently linked and which articles you can think of that should be linked.

You also want to consider the information you are providing in the article. Is there anything old or outdated? Or anything that is no longer true for you.

Read through your article slowly and thoroughly making notes along the way. Think about it from the perspective of a reader and the answers they are there to seek.

When a pin and therefore an article is going viral you want to try to take that traffic to other helpful and related posts.

First off see what is already linked. Are they relevant links that the reader is likely to click?

Where could you add more links?

I typically place links within the body of an article if they fit there fairly naturally. I always want these links to feel helpful and useful. They should not interrupt the content, but rather support it with more information.

Take the time while reading through to look for linking opportunities.

The end of the article is another great place to link to other articles. You could link again to articles you already linked to in the body of the articles. You could also link to articles that you could not incorporate into the body of the articles.

Make sure all linked articles are related, relevant, and useful to your reader.

This is an opportunity to seriously increase traffic to other articles.

If you are making income with ads or affiliates this is helpful.

You could also intentionally link to articles that have multiple affiliate links if desired. Just please make sure they are appropriate to link to.

3. Linking Products

When reading through your article that is currently going viral did you see any affiliate links? Did you see any opportunities to place affiliate links?

If you are concerned with linking to too many products only go for large purchases. In a baby gear article, it is more worthwhile to link to strollers and carriers rather than pacifiers and bottles.

I am saying quality over quantity.

Make sure you have at least one link in the article that can earn you commissions.

This is a way to turn your traffic into money. Take advantage of it while you can!

More traffic equals more clicks!

4. Email Opt-Ins

Depending on where you are in your blogging journey you may be working on building your email lists of subscribers. Typically this is done by offering small freebies. These could be PDF checklists, weekly food menus, or anything related to your niche that you are happy to provide for free. This should be something your reader wants enough to subscribe to your email list. After they subscribe they get the freebie and you get their email.

Overall it is pretty simple.

When you have a boost in traffic you can use the opportunity to gain more email subscribers. First, check your article and see if you currently have an email opt-in? Secondly, check the quality of it. It is good as is, or should it be improved?

If you do not have a freebie, go make one now! Get the form placed in your article to start gaining subscribers!

5. Miscellaneous

I placed #5 as miscellaneous. This is where everything else falls. When a pin and therefore article goes viral you need to look out for many small details. Look over any images and make sure they are beautiful.

Consider adding your logo somewhere in the post for more brand recognition.

Make sure you give your reader the ability to share this post on all social media platforms possible.

If you have anything you think you should do specifically to your blog when a pin goes viral add it here.

Conclusion

I do want to end with a word of caution. Do not do anything to a viral pin and posts that you have not done successfully before.

If you have never added an email freebie now may not be the time to experiment.

You do not want to do anything to your posts that would cause a break in the links, URL, or even crash your website.

Only make modifications you are comfortable making.

Also if you take a closer look at this list all of these tasks should already be done BEFORE your pins go viral. Every time you publish a post these steps should be a part of the process.

This list is to DOUBLE CHECK yourself.

Your posts should be amazing before they go viral that way you are not scrambling as quickly as possible to improve them.

Remember to only do things you are comfortable with doing.

Do not crash your site when you have a viral pin!
