How Much Time Commitment My Blog Takes in a Single Month

For the month of January 2022, I decided I would track my time spent blogging. I wanted to see which tasks were taking up how much time. I also wanted to see which of my two blogs was getting more attention.

Hours Spent on Blog #1

Blog #1 is my first experience blogging. It was launched in January of 2021 so it is now a year old. This is a mommy and parenting blog. www.momwifeandeverydaylife.com

For it, I publish content, promoted it on Pinterest, and recently have started pursuing email subscribers.

I have tracked 15 hours spent directly working on Blog #1 in the form of content creation and publication.

This can be broken down into tasks such as titles, outlines, writing, editing, placing product links, interlinking articles, placing images, and publishing the final product. I completed 6 articles in these 15 hours.

I have never tracked my time like this and directly correlated it to content publication. It is interesting to know how long it takes. I typically write in batches and complete all the tasks in batching such as linking. This makes it difficult to clock the time spent on a single article.

This way though I can take the 15 hours and divide it by the 6 articles to get an average of about 2.5 hours per article.

This of course can vary greatly depending on the specific content. Certain articles have more links, images, and require building tables. Other articles are quick and easy.

I will talk about my time spent working on Pinterest further below.

Hours Spent on Blog #2

My second blog is this one. www.bloggingwithamanda.com

Here I write about all my blogging experiences. I record this type of information to help new bloggers know what they are getting into. I also publish income and traffic reports here monthly.

As of January 2022, this blog is 6 months old. It was launched in July 2021.

I have tracked 24.5 hours spent directly working on Blog #2 in the form of content creation and publication.

This can be broken down into tasks such as titles, outlines, writing, editing, placing product links, interlinking articles, placing images, and publishing the final product. I completed 8 articles in these 15 hours.

If we break the 24.5 hours down into those 8 articles it comes out to 3.0625. So let’s just make that an even 3 hours to publish a single article.

I believe these articles for blog #2 take longer than blog #1 because I insert more photos. In my income reports, I provide a large number of screenshots showing my numbers and stats. The images take time to gather, compress, and get placed into the article.

Knowing that Blog #2 articles take slightly longer than Blog #1 articles is both interesting and helpful in planning for content production.

Time Spent on Pinterest

Unfortunately, I did not split my time spent on Pinterest between blog #1 and blog #2. The time spent on Pinterest for both blogs for the month was 26 hours.

Pinterest is necessary at this point because it is almost my only source of traffic. I simply have to do Pinterest.

The problem is Pinterest is a time-suck. I don’t particularly find enjoyment in Pinterest as a whole. It is something that I see as work that must be done.

Let’s talk about how I spent all these hours on Pinterest.

First off pins must be created.

This requires a background photo that either I have taken or I need to find from stock photography sources.  I need to download the photo and compress it to decrease the size.

I then get that photo onto Canva and create the pin.  I make 4 slightly different versions of the pin which will then be pinned to four different boards.

I then download and compress the pins in their completed form and put them in a folder for use in the near future.

Now aside from the image I gather the other necessary information.

I have created documents that I refer to as Quick Pin Templates. I have a document that corresponds to every document. I type up multiple titles and descriptions for the article. I copy the URL and note which boards this article should be pinned to.

The idea here was when I go to create and publish the pin I have all the necessary information in one place handy and ready to go.

There is a bit of upfront work in creating the Quick Pin Template but then I can more easily and quickly publish pins.

Time Spent on General Administrative Tasks

I clocked 4 hours spent on random tasks that were not necessarily related to one blog versus the other.

These hours were spent on general organization, to-do lists, goal setting, learning more about Convertkit, and gaining email subscribers.

Most tasks are associated with blog #1 or blog #2 but these random few hours I decided should be kept separate.

Breakdown of Time Spent on Tasks in January

TasksHoursPercentage
Blog #11522%
Blog #224.535%
Pinterest2637%
General Administrative Tasks46%
Total Hours69.5 Hours

In total for the month of January 2022, I spent just under 70 hours working on my 2 blogs. Keep in mind I do have a job currently, though it comes with very flexible hours. I also do very little work on my blogs during the weekend. This is time I choose to spend with my family.

Overall I have found it very interesting to know where my time goes.

I hate to see so much time dedicated to Pinterest at this point. I am always working to get faster and more efficient there. But for now, it is what it is. This is why if I recommended anything to a new blogger it would be to learn SEO from the beginning. Don’t just rely on Pinterest!
